Shut It Down: An Exploration of Competing Ideologies in the Sitcom 30 Rock

This project explores the sitcom 30 Rock for its representation of opposing ideologies in the television industry. Through a textual analysis, focusing on the characters Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy, the conflict between creative idealism and conservative capitalism will be discussed. It examines the situational comedy genre and its ability to critique the culture of broadcast television. The series’ plot follows the cast and crew of the fictional NBC comedy and variety show TGS with Tracy Jordan. This groundbreaking show displays a behind the scene look of the production process and television industry to its audience. 30 Rock utilizes the humor approaches of satire and parody to critique the culture of the television industry, commenting on the creative and corporate practices involved in production.
