This presentation will provide a brief overview of my experience with Educational Teacher Performance Assessment (EdTPA) in the high school art classroom. I began by gathering information about my student’s abilities, preferences, and interests. With this information and the rubrics set out by EdTPA, I planned a four lesson learning segment around historical ceramics. While learning about the historical and cultural origins of ceramics, students explored how artists appropriate and build on earlier works of art. Students applied this by using one or two historical ceramic objects as inspiration for an original artwork. Students analyzed the historical works form and function, building technique, and surface treatments while focusing on the organizational elements of art and principles of design. Students derived elements from the historical object(s) to create a new work that was personal interpretation of the historical piece. Through this learning segment students expanded their knowledge of clay, ceramic history, handbuilding techniques, and surfaces treatments to create one ceramic artwork. Results of this experience and the process of EdTPA will be shared at this session.
