Terrorism as a Moral Panic

I am researching the moral panic surrounding terrorism and the War on Iraq. I believe that people have a disproportional fear of the likelihood of terrorist attacks and are under the impression that the safety of the U.S. is continually at risk of harm from outside forces. This moral panic is taking place in the United States. It is happening now, and it began with the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The grassroots public in this moral panic is the right-wing sector of the nation with its focus on protection the nation at all costs. The moral entrepreneurs are the leaders of the Republican party, specifically the former President George W. Bush and his administration. Republicans hope to benefit from this moral panic by justifying combat and particular legislation under the guise of defense and security. Some of the ‘folk devils’ in this moral panic are conspiracy groups such as the New York 9/11 Truth Movement, which seeks to challenge the Bush administration’s decision to go to war in Iraq through their attempt to prove that the “War on Terror” was declared as a means to push the right-wing agenda. I believe that people should care about this moral panic because it continues to drive public policy regarding the safety of the nation, and the irrational fear has resulted in the continuing war overseas.
